It's only Hal with him on the beach today; the other dogs tend to stick close to Sam and Sam is with Lucy, but Hal, somehow, she's become his dog. He never knew her previous owner, knows only that he and River were close, and that, at least, makes him think that, whoever he was, he must have been a good guy. But he doesn't know what he was like, doesn't know what it is about him that makes Hal want to stay by his side most of the time, but he finds he doesn't mind. Before the island he was certainly not a dog person, preferring the company of his small cat, but things change.
The island changes things.
It's early evening, the sun is still at least a half hour from dipping behind the trees and Mathias doesn't want to move from this spot. He's gone for a dive, his scuba equipment is sitting on the sand beside him and he's still dripping, but he makes no move to reach for his towel. Sometimes, he knows, awful things happen to the people here. They lose their loved ones and people die, the island isn't a safe haven from that, but at this moment, he's happy to be here. He's happy to be alive.
There are plants in the hut he shares with Lucy and Sam, only two, one in the main room and one in his bedroom, but they're there. Even a few months ago he might have had trouble sleeping with them there, but no longer. Back home, he's dead. Acceptance of that has been a long time coming, but he thinks it's finally here. He's dead. Henrich is dead. Stacy is dead.
But not now and not here.
Smiling faintly, he reaches over and strokes Hal's fur, then lifts his hand to wave to the figure coming down the beach toward him.

Date: 2012-02-09 03:54 pm (UTC)"Have you ever gone diving?" he asks suddenly. It's one of those things he enjoys sharing and while he's happy to teach people he doesn't know well, it's one of those things he'd rather share with the people he cares about. His friends, those close to him. He's looking forward to the day when Sam is big enough that he can take her on a short, shallow dive, getting her used to the respirator and the mask.
It's something he'd like to share with Sookie, though, if she's interested. He's shown Neil, taken Claire, he might even be able to talk Lucy into it, but right now, he grins and nods toward it. "I should teach you sometime." Not now, not when she's wearing such a pretty dress, but he hopes she'll say yes.

Date: 2012-02-10 07:46 am (UTC)"Do you really think I've gone diving? You remember that I've like, never really been anywhere, right? Except Louisiana. Which, if you don't know, is definitely not the best place for clean water," Sookie laughs, brushing her hair out of the way as a breeze picks up a few curls, smiling up at Mathias, before gazing out over the ocean, all of it suddenly seeming closer, open to her.
"I would love it if you could teach me."

Date: 2012-02-10 05:51 pm (UTC)"I'd be happy to teach you," he says with a smile, looking pleased. "It's something I've been doing for... a long time. I love doing it and I love taking people down with me. I've taken Neil out and a girl I know named Claire. I'll take Sam, eventually, when she's big enough."
It's one of the few things he can talk about a lot, too, once of the things that get him genuinely excited. "There is a lot of things to learn before you can dive, but I think you would be a good student," he continues.

Date: 2012-02-11 06:32 am (UTC)"I didn't know that there was a lot of stuff I'd have to learn before diving, though," she admits, curious. "Like what? I know how to swim, at least. I used to go down as far as I could into the ten foot pool, which probably doesn't sound all too impressive compared to diving, but... I can do that, at least, which has gotta be better than nothing."

Date: 2012-02-11 09:32 pm (UTC)He's more animated now, his hands gesturing as he speaks, excited about the prospect of teaching Sookie these things. It doesn't even occur to him that he should be feeling awkward or uncomfortable and later on, he'll be grateful for that. "You might be more comfortable in a wet suit as well." He doesn't always wear one, mostly because he doesn't dive deep enough or long enough to feel the water when it gets colder, but he knows it's easier, sometimes, to learn when one isn't worrying about how the water feels.
"It isn't necessary here, but it might make it easier," he continues. "But other than that, I have all the equipment we would need. A mask, an extra respirator. Your own tank, once you've gotten comfortable in the water."

Date: 2012-02-12 06:18 pm (UTC)"Gosh, I can't even imagine what it must be like to be so far below the water," she marvels, shaking her head. "Doesn't that like... give you a headache or something? It's so deep, I can't imagine that you wouldn't feel the pressure. I remember feeling the pressure just from when I was in the local pool. And wow, I had— I had no idea that you had all this stuff. The island always seems to figure out how to provide us with no end of hobbies to keep us busy."
On a worse day, she might've thought it part of some conspiracy theory, or a way to keep them all on the island. Today, though, she just views it as something to be glad for, through and through. Everyone should have this, she thinks. Something to occupy themselves with.

Date: 2012-02-13 02:14 am (UTC)He looks at the equipment behind him and shrugs, smiling faintly. "I received all I would need the year before last and then last year it gave me additional equipment to teach someone and several more oxygen tanks. I have to be careful with how much I use, especially since it gave me nothing like that this year, but there's plenty left. I ration it well."
One day he's going to run out, but until then, he's just going to keep hoping that the island gives him enough to get by with.

Date: 2012-02-13 10:30 am (UTC)She rubs her thumb curiously over her lip, glancing over at the equipment, and feeling a rare surge of gratitude towards the island for providing Mathias with all of these things.
"I think it's great," she blurts out, grinning. "That you've got all of this. I mean, not only is it great for those of us who want to see more of the island, who knows, it could come in handy in any number of other ways, too. Helping people to dive further even without equipment, for instance."

Date: 2012-02-13 04:15 pm (UTC)"I'm not much of a free diver," he admits, knowing how dangerous it can be. "But I've let the council know that I have this equipment, that if they should need a diver for anything, it's available. I'm available. I think there are other people on the island who dive, too. Maybe even some who free dive." He thinks he's seen it now and then, but it isn't something he wants to do and he doesn't know enough to teach anyone.

Date: 2012-02-14 09:55 am (UTC)She presses a hand to her chin, thoughtful. Is this, she wonders, what Mathias spends his free time on? There's a part of it that feels so much more romantic to her than what she does, simply serving people at the Winchester. Diving's all about finding a different world.
"You know," she points out with a grin, "I was so the biggest Ariel fan when that first came out."

Date: 2012-02-14 05:51 pm (UTC)He grins when she mentioned The Little Mermaid, trying to remember how old he'd been when that came out. When they were small, his mother had taken them to the movies only occasionally and he thinks Henrich threw a fit about having to see what he called 'a girl's movie'.
"Well, there are no singing crabs down there," he tells her. "I'm sorry to disappoint."

Date: 2012-02-15 08:39 am (UTC)She pauses, glancing one way, then the other.
"Wait, I know that I was joking about that, but... are there sharks? You know, of the great white kind that would come after me during Shark Week?"
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-15 05:33 pm (UTC)Usually isn't always, though, and he knows what to look for. "It's part of why you don't go alone until you're more experienced," he explains. "I know what sort of sealife to look out for, things we shouldn't get close to. You'll learn them, too." But until then, he'll dive with her. The last thing Mathias wants to do is put anyone he cares about in danger.
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-16 04:30 pm (UTC)She rests her chin on her knuckles, glancing over in sharp interest. "I'd love to learn, though, really. When do you think we'd be able to start?"
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-17 03:06 pm (UTC)"Soon," he says thoughtfully. "We would want to find you a wet suit if you think you would be more comfortable in one, make sure the mask fits. At first we won't actually be doing any diving. I'll teach you how to retriever your respirator while we're standing in a few feet of water. You don't want to have to learn when you can't breathe." That only makes it dangerous and it's not worth the risk. They have all the time in the world on the island.
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-18 10:59 am (UTC)Lifting her gaze to the sky and trying to decide if wearing a wet suit would look slimming or absolutely ridiculous, Sookie asks, "So how does the wet suit make things easier? Or is it more just a preference sort of thing? Because all I know is that they look kinda tight and hard to breathe in."
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-19 07:17 pm (UTC)He only wears a wet suit during cold water dives, which he hasn't actually done in some time. Years before his arrival on the island even, which is strange to think of. It's another life, another person.
"I don't use one here," he says. "The water is generally warm enough for short dives, though if you stay out for very long, you will probably get cold. It's the same as going for a swim in the ocean, though, so you know best how you'll feel."
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-20 09:29 am (UTC)"I might need to test it out with and without," she concludes with a slight flinch. "I'm so clueless with this stuff, and even though we've got beaches all around us, I spend more time sunbathing than swimming. Mostly 'cause I get so lazy about reapplying sunblock."
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-20 08:24 pm (UTC)"We could go to the box and find a suit in your size," he suggests. "Then you can go for a swim with it, see how it feels. If it isn't comfortable, then you can try without. There's really no right or wrong way to dive, especially here." They're not diving for exploration and they're not going out for very far or very deep. It's pure recreation and there are really no rules beyond learning how to clear her mask and use the respirator properly.
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-21 06:54 am (UTC)"I've got some free time now, if you want. Or... depending on your schedule, we could always figure out some other time. I'm guessing that diving during the day's a better idea, right? Are there such things as nocturnal sea life that only comes out at night? 'Cause that would admittedly freak me out," Sookie remarks, pulling a face in the direction of the water.
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-21 04:53 pm (UTC)He turns, lifting the oxygen tank, then nods toward his hut. "I'll just put this away and change into something dry and we can see if the box will give us anything good. I can't promise any wet suit we find won't be bright orange with blue stripes, but hopefully it will fit." The only wet suit he's been able to find for himself is bright green, which is another reason he prefers not to wear it.

Date: 2012-02-23 06:38 am (UTC)Following along after Mathias, she glances up at the sun, stretching her arms out and taking a deep breath.
"I'm glad we'll be going out with the sun. Not that I'm afraid of the dark, necessarily, but I always feel like things are more fun when the sun's out. More beautiful. The colors just pop."
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-24 07:36 pm (UTC)"Diving is always more beautiful when it's sunny out," he agrees, heading up the steps and then holding the door open for Sookie. Carefully, he returns the air tank to the small closet he's built for his equipment, then disappears into the bedroom to find something dry to change into. "It's like you said," he calls. "Everything is brighter."
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-25 06:40 pm (UTC)She follows him through the hut, only pausing at his bedroom and waiting outside instead, back easily pressed against the wall. "You know, I miss driving so much," she comments. "I never thought I cared for it so much back home, but there is something so comforting about sitting in the driver's seat and just watching everything pass by you in a blur."
(no subject)
Date: 2012-02-27 03:44 am (UTC)"Driving," he repeats, nodding. It isn't something he'd done much of before the army, but there is all sorts of training involved with his time spent there, more driving than he'd ever done before. "I imagine it's definitely something a lot of people miss," he says. "It seems to be the kind of thing that many people find quite... relaxing, ja?"
