"It is," Mathias says with a grin. "It's easier to learn when you already know how to swim, but there are other things to learn. How to be safe, for one, knowing the hand signals you use to communicate with other divers under water. How to clear your mask under water, how to use the respirator. What to do if it falls out of your mouth so you can find it quickly, because if you're down thirty or forty meters, it's too far to get back up in time."
He's more animated now, his hands gesturing as he speaks, excited about the prospect of teaching Sookie these things. It doesn't even occur to him that he should be feeling awkward or uncomfortable and later on, he'll be grateful for that. "You might be more comfortable in a wet suit as well." He doesn't always wear one, mostly because he doesn't dive deep enough or long enough to feel the water when it gets colder, but he knows it's easier, sometimes, to learn when one isn't worrying about how the water feels.
"It isn't necessary here, but it might make it easier," he continues. "But other than that, I have all the equipment we would need. A mask, an extra respirator. Your own tank, once you've gotten comfortable in the water."
