"Do people get reckless? Try to touch them?" Mathias asks. There's still a part of him that wants to do just that, but he's not willing to risk his life again so soon after having it given back to him. Maybe in a few months or years when he's settled on the island, but not right now.
He would feel terrible if Veronica had to deal with reporting his death somewhere because he was stupid.
