When she offers, Mathias holds out the flippers, not wanting to shove all his gear in her direction the very first time they've met. He'd managed to get it all down to the beach on his own, so he can manage to get it back home, but he does appreciate the offer to help.
"That's good," he says, about the swimming, then begins to head back up the beach toward the hut. "That would definitely have to be the first step if you weren't already able to swim." Which he suspects she already knows, but there are some people out there who just want to skip over swimming and go straight to diving. "Have you ever been snorkelling before?" That, too, will help if she has been. There are so many little things that can help the adjustment between floating on the surface and actually going down where there's less sun and the pressure increases significantly.
