Whoever it was, they're not there now, and there's more to it than just the person. The green fuzz growing on Sam's clothes was too familiar, but it's gone now, too. It worries Mathias, but he doesn't think anyone is in danger. He's just confused, mostly.

"They're gone," he says. "Maybe I didn't see them in the first place." He's not entirely convinced of that, but he can't explain their rapid disappearance either. There was no rustle of trees, no sound of footsteps. The man was there one moment and the next he was gone.
