"I'm sorry, Veronica," he says simply and leaves it at that. All too clearly he remembers Amy's hand on his shoulder, her attempts to give him comfort when he'd wanted none. He doesn't want to be that person, he knows how frustrating and uncomfortable it can be.

"It hardens you," he adds, knowing it does. "It's all we can do, I guess, when it gets that bad."
