"I didn't," Mathias answers. "We spent several days on the hill. If we tried to leave, the men with the weapons would stop us. The people I was with... they started to die. Amy and the Greek were both smothered to death by the vines and I do know how crazy that sounds, but it happened. The vines were... sentient. They did this." He holds out his free hand toward Julie and although the scars have faded significantly, it's still clear his palm was badly burned at one point.

"Eric was convinced they were under his skin." He pauses and laughs. "They were under his skin, but he was cutting himself, trying to get them out and when I tried to take the knife from him..." He trails off and touches his breastbone, right where the knife went in. "Then I was here."
